I’m Bodil, a book and identity designer from Trondheim, Norway, holding a PhD in Typography & Graphic Communication from the University of Reading. WORK | Working with Jordbærpikene for many years it was great to get the job of developing the visual identity for Bitastad Holding, who is the new owner of Jordbærpikene. Bitastad is a serious, active and prospective owner of companies in food and service. It has been important to convey this using good typography, elements of “motion” in the logo and a color palette that is both solid and playful. See more from the Bitastad visual identity here.
PERSONAL PROJECT | Are things predetermined or is it just a coincidence that life sometimes change direction?
This year´s theme for my annual report is about how a talk with a former colleague in 2016 changed my perception of my own company, my business and my everyday life for the next three to four years… Or maybe for the future? She told me about a Norwegian Professor who has a Research Degree in Typography. I was inspired and suddenly realized that I was ready to slowly change my career. Where does this decision brings me? – I don´t know – time will show.
WORK | I am part of a group called KultSign which is an interdisciplinary group that work like an agency, with focus on information and communication for various cultural activities. In KultSign we also initiate our own interdisciplinary cultural projects. KultSign consists of visual artist/photographer Eskil Roll, author/copywriter Gunn Merete Roll and myself. We collaborate with filmmakers, web designers and architects on various projects.
We are here preparing an exhibition in The Archbishop’s Palace Museum. The exhibition is called Møter (Meetings) and is a photo exhibition about the joy of walking, the happiness of arriving, and about the meetings along the way. Visually this exhibition is between art photography and documentary photo, – documentary in relation to content, artistic in terms of expression. In addition to offer inspiration and information about nature and culture adventures in Norway in general, it has a specific focus on hiking on the ancient pilgrim paths.
We are excited to welcome The Norwegian Minister of Culture Linda Hofstad Helland who will open our exhibition on July 28.
WORK | The book “Prosjekttrd” is beginning to look like a book. Looking, considering, discussing and arguing. A great and exciting process until the work is finished and the book is ready for printing. Photo: Anne-Line Bakken.
TRAVEL AND INSPIRATION | Staying in London is always great, working in nice cafes, visiting bookstores and Tate Modern, walking along the streets looking for signs, typography and illustrations.
PHD RESEARCH | Sometimes it´s exciting to turn your life upside down, think new thoughts and just do it. My life will change quite dramatically though I have been offered a place to study for a PhD in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading from September 2017. Through my research I will look into how the change of food availability and development of human health has affected verbal and pictorial narratives that are relevant to health on front-of-package food labels in Britain from 1850 – 1970. I´m excited, a bit scared and very happy to have been given this possibility.
WORK | New identity for Jazzfest 2017. Focusing on typography and playful colors, the visual identity for Jazzfest 2017 has been integrated into this year’s poster, festival program, newspaper and t-shirt. Photographer of this year’s festival motif is Daniel Bolstad, Norwegian School of Photography.
WORK | A new and exciting book project, working with photographer Anne-Line Bakken and author Nina Vennevold. We are in the initial phase researching books and looking for typography, paper, size, colors and patterns…
WORK | New project for Cirka Teater. They have made its mark with a rich, visual, theatrical language. The repertoire ranges from small, intimate performances to stunning outdoor spectacles and main stage productions. At the moment I am doing research in their own garage to a new brochure about their productions.
PERSONAL PROJECT | Annual report 2015 for Bodil, my own company. The theme this year is New York, based on my trip to the Big City in connection with a workshop with Brooklyn Brewery, Ringnes and ablemagic regarding development of the visual identity for E.C.
